What is the origin of teapots or teacups?
According to legend, tea was invented almost 5000 years ago by Shen Nong, a Chinese emperor and father of traditional Chinese medicine. The first written texts on tea appeared more than 1000 years ago. One of the most important, The Tea Classic, written in the second half of the 8th century by the Chinese tea master Lu Yu, mentions a whole list of utensils needed to prepare a cup of tea, including a tea bowl. Tea bowls were, in fact, the first tea cups. Tea cups or bowls without handles are still an important (and beautiful) part of tea drinking cultures in many Asian countries. The tea cups we use today, the ones with handles, were invented almost a thousand years later in Europe.
What is a tisanera or teacup?
A tisanera is a cup for brewing and drinking tea that incorporates a filter (usually steel) and a lid. It is used to brew tea in bulk individually, making it one of the most practical methods of brewing tea in bulk for one person. The word tisanera comes from "tisane", which is basically an infusion prepared from dried or dehydrated herbs, spices or fruits that are boiled in water.
What qualities should a good tisanera or tea cup have?
.- It should not be porous: Simply because a porous material will retain different flavours and aromas, all of which are detrimental to the taste of the tea being drunk.
- It should not be porous.
- It should allow the tea to cool slowly: A cup with a wide rim cools the tea more quickly, while a tall, narrow one keeps it hotter for longer and concentrates the aroma. Thin cups lose heat more quickly, while ceramic retains it longer than glass.
- It should be safe from the heat of the tea.
- Must be chemically safe: We don't recommend plastic cups, but if you must use them, make sure they are BPA-free.
What material should my tisanera or teacup be made of?
Tea pots or teacups can be made of different materials. Not all are microwave and dishwasher safe, and some should be cleaned with water only. Some materials are more delicate, while others may be more resistant.
- Ceramic tea pots or teacups: Ceramic is one of the most commonly used materials in the manufacture of teaware. Ceramics refers to fired clay pottery made in kilns, but includes stoneware, porcelain and terracotta. They are a popular choice for both aesthetics and use. Ceramic retains heat longer due to its porosity, is resistant to high temperatures, and prevents the taste of metal or other materials from leaching into the tea.

- Porcelain teapots or porcelain teacups: Porcelain is a more resistant, less porous type of ceramic with a glazed finish, which is produced by firing clay at very high temperatures. Porcelain tisaneras or cups are preferred by tea connoisseurs.
- Glass tea pots or cups: Glass tea pots or cups meet all the above criteria. Vitrified glass does not react at all with the tea, but can quickly lose heat depending on its thickness and is not very resistant. Borosilicate glass is a great option, almost as good as porcelain and less fragile. Double-walled glass vessels are a good choice, as the inner wall retains heat and the outer wall makes it easier to hold. In addition, the appearance of the tea through the two layers of glass is very attractive.

- Plastic tea pots or teacups: We do not recommend these. Please note that not all plastics are chemically inert and can leach toxic elements when exposed to high temperatures .
How to clean stains on tea pots or teacups?
A common inconvenience when drinking tea is that tea pots or teacups end up staining. You will find that rubbing over and over again will not remove these stains and soap, hot water or dishwasher will not be effective.
The best way to remove stains is to wash them with soap, hot water or dishwasher.
The best method to remove these stains without damaging the enamel of the tea pots is baking soda. To remove tea stains from mugs, wet the inside of the mug with cold water and sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda so that it covers all the brown marks (it should stick easily to the wet walls of the mug). Leave it for a few minutes and then use a cloth or sponge to wipe off all the stains. You will have to scrub a bit, as it won't slide off easily. Then wash as usual with your dish soap.
